The mission of Newspring Visual Arts is to nurture middle and high school art students in Spring Branch and to promote and sell their artwork at an auction held in the Spring.
Leadership
The Visual Arts efforts of Newspring are led by Bill Moehring - Northbrook Middle, Judy Barry - Landrum Middle, Lyn Gentry - Northbrook HS, Suzanne Guenther - Spring Woods Middle, and Taylor Ince - Spring Woods HS.
The Student Art Auction
Newspring Visual Arts is a student art project created to nurture middle and high school art students in Spring Branch. One way in which we will do this is to host an annual auction of student artwork. The students will create original works of art and submit them. A panel of judges, comprised of professional artists who have volunteered to mentor the students, will determine which pieces will be included in the auction. These professional artists will also assist the students in pricing their work. Compensation for the student’s work will come in the form of a gift card in the amount of the winning bid. The student may choose from several pre-approved merchants in the Spring Branch area.
Professional Artists at Schools
Another way in which we nurture art students is to send out professional artists to the art classes at Landrum Middle School, Northbrook Middle School, Spring Woods Middle School, Spring Woods High School and Northbrook High School. Once a month, one of the professional artists will come to the school and discuss his or her profession. Topics will include their medium, their schooling, selection of subject matter, pricing of artwork, and many others that explain how and why they chose art as a career. There will be a question and answer session at each visit, so students may interact with the artists. The artists may also assist the students with their projects by critiquing their work, if desired. We hope the artists will be able to demonstrate how the love of art can be turned into a profession.
